Upcoming WordPress 2.3 will break current version of Organize Series Plugin

Just a heads up folks that the upcoming new version of WordPress will break my Organize Series Plugin.  I just read a great article about the new Taxonomy Schema changes that will be introduced with the new version of WordPress and unfortunately due to the way I designed the plugin, Organize Series won’t work with 2.3.  This isn’t a knock against 2.3 though because I like the direction they are going with the taxonomy structure in the database.

Unfortunately it means a pretty significant rewrite of my plugin in order to work right with 2.3  On the plus-side – in the course of the rewrite I will probably try to introduce some of the features I’ve had on my ticket list for a while.  Also, because I use my plugin pretty throughly myself I’ll probably start working on it sooner rather than later.

However, I can’t make any promises regarding time frame for a new version release as this is something I do as a hobby.  I just wanted to announce this now though so that people using my plugin will know not to upgrade right away when WordPress 2.3 comes out (unless you don’t mind not using the plugin for a while 🙂 ).

If you have any questions about this notice, feel free to leave a comment.

  1. thank you for keeping us up to date on this – it’s a favorite plug-in of ours and knowing that it won’t be useable right away will effect our decision on when to upgrade

  2. I have several series ideas that I would love to use this plugin for, so I can’t wait for it to get its 2.3 upgrade! Thanks for the heads up – I guess I’ll hold off on writing those series!

  3. Hi Lindsey,
I started the rewrite yesterday (yeah, took me long enough to get going!). You’re not the only one who can’t wait until I’m done – now that I’ve seen what will be capable with the new WordPress taxonomy schema it looks like I’ll be able to finally start shaping this plugin the way I want….which means, I can’t wait ’till I’m done! Still, I can’t work at this full-time each day as I’d like to, so it might be later rather than sooner before I’m complete. A rough time-line I’m aiming for is two weeks – but no guarantees.

As I get along in the rewrite I’ll maybe make some posts about the new features coming in version 2.0 to whet peoples interest 🙂

  4. Looking forward to the revised version, too. I’ve been using it to handle each series of The Amazing Race, as I have a small competition where we guess who will be eliminated each episode. Fortunately, the next season isn’t until January, so you can take your time. 🙂 Thanks for a great plugin.

  5. Hey there,

For those who have to have a series management plugin and WordPress 2.3, there is still the In Series plugin. It’s not directly compatible with Organize Series (you’ll have to edit your posts and add them to the series that you want), but I’m open to writing a category-to-In-Series converter if there’s demand.

In the meantime, I hope that the rewrite goes well for you Darren — they’re annoying to do, but they’re nice when they’re finished. 🙂
