My first introduction to the “Head-First”/”Head-Rush” series of books published by O’Reilly was a good one. The style(s) of learning the books use in teaching the subject make for easy reading and quick assimilation of the material.
I cheated a bit when I read this book though because I didn’t do all the exercises in it which means I’ll probably end up leafing through it again when I try to apply what I’ve learned about AJAX and the relevant concepts such as DOM, XML, JSON. However, because of my “acquaintance” with programming it was fairly easy to pick up.
Which brings me to an important point. If you are not familiar with any basic programming concepts forget about reading this book. You will need to understand html, .css and at least have a comprehensive grasp of basic code structure underlying most programming languages. If you don’t, instead of a “head rush” you’ll have a “head burn”. But for those with the basic skills this book will accelerate your understanding of AJAX and the other concepts driving the Web 2.0 landscape.
I am very glad I bought this book - it’s given me a plethora of ideas and motivation to start applying what I’ve learned to my websites.
