This book - while very well done, was a bit off from what I expected it to be. It is definitely not your typical “qualities of a good leader” book.
What threw me off was the title, “Basic Christian Leadership”. That title accurately described perhaps 15% of the book. However if I had of paid more attention to the subtitle then what I read would have met my expectations because the subtitle is definitely a more accurate description of the books contents.
The book reads more like an extended sermon (or series of sermons) than a book. John Stott basically writes an exposition of the first four chapters of 1 Corinthians. He begins each chapter with the full biblical text of the passage in Corinthians he is going to be expounding from and then proceeds to do a verse by verse application of the text.
This kind of book is something that I think only John Stott could have pulled off. You can almost hear him speaking when you read it!
If it weren’t for my differing expectations when I picked up the book to read I’d probably give it a higher rating. As it was I still enjoyed it - and definitely gained a lot of insight from John’s study of 1 Corinthians. At the very least, this is another book that I may use in Deacon training/devotional times.
