Thoughts on Sunday [April 5, 2009]

I missed posting about two weekends ago (March 29th) but life has been really busy!  Sorry folks.  This past weekend I had the awesome pleasure of having my kids to myself as Ker went to Niagara Falls for a Women’s Retreat (one of those times where I wish Ker kept a blog – she has some AWESOME things to share about her experience at the retreat!).  Needless to say, I had a blast with my kids this weekend.  I SOOOO MUCH LIKE BEING A DAD!  We had pillowfights, played a game called “Pictureka!”, played some Wii, went to McDonald’s for breakfast and did all sorts of other stuff together.

My observations/thoughts on Sunday at WPA:

  • I taught the first session of “Chasing Daylight” for the “Bread and Breakfast Class” (young adults) in the morning.  I absolutely love this study/book by Erwin McManus.  So challenging.  The first session was on “Choices”.  The most spiritual act we can do every day is choose.  What will YOU choose this day?  WHO will you choose to serve?

Late Night Sunday thoughts…

It’s late but I just wanted to write a few thoughts on today before heading off to bed:

  • Today was the first Sunday back for Pastor Marshall since he went to Africa.  Great to have our pastor back!
  • I shared a teaser video and introduced the “Chasing Daylight” series that I’m going to be teaching to the Young Adults Bread and Breakfast class in a couple weeks.  I’m so pumped about this!  The book by Erwin McManus has been an incredible inspiration and I really am looking forward to interacting with the class on the story of Jonathon and his armour-bearer taking on the Philistine army…Seizing the divine moments!
  • Both morning service praise times were INCREDIBLE!  I’ve gotta confess though – the second service was especially amazing as God touched those coming to the front because of weariness and tiredness in their lives.  You could see the impact the Spirit was making in their hearts and lives!
  • There were also some incredible Holy Spirit led words from the Lord as people moved in the spiritual gifts this morning.  Those who stay away from corporate worship don’t know what they’re missing.  It’s so IMPORTANT to come together to minister to one another!

Thoughts on Sunday (March 15, 2009)

This past weekend was BUSY!  But so much fun!  Saturday night Ker (my wife) and I joined a group of couples at the church to watch the movie “Fireproof”  Wow!  What an amazing movie and what a challenge for married couples!  I’m so excited about showing this movie on March 29th for the evening service at WPA.  If you haven’t seen it and you live in the Waterloo, Ontario area you’ve GOT to come and see this movie!

Sunday I spoke in both services and shared a two part series entitled “Holy Desperation” based on Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they will be filled”.   Here’s some reflection on Sunday…

  • I don’t think we really know what it’s like to be desperate in North America.
  • To “hunger and thirst” doesn’t just talk about a passive desire but a desperate longing.
  • Holy Desperation puts us in the path of encountering and dwelling in God’s presence!  Me, I want to cultivate that desperate pursuit of him.  Not a wild-eyed, but a wide-eyed desperation.
  • “The key to will power is want-power!” If you really WANT something then you’ll find the will power to get there!!!

Thoughts on Sunday (January 25th)

Sunday was my wife’s birthday and  she’ll say I forgot (but I really didn’t)  but I will admit I was pretty cheesy about it.  Still – I think the kids and I pulled off an okay day for her…  It was tough with Sunday being the busiest day of the week for me!  Thanks to those of you who gave her gifts and birthday greetings – I know she really appreciated it!

Here’s my thoughts for Sunday:

  • have I said I love being a pastor at WPA yet?  Well consider it said!
  • Rev. Jim Reese spoke in the morning services, “Just Live by Faith”.  Very inspiring and I loved the sound of his voice (listen to the .mp3 to hear it for yourself!)
  • Jim’s definition of faith: “In Christ alone, by grace alone, according to scriptures alone”
  • Using what Hebrews 11 had to say about Abraham – Jim outlined how you live by Faith:
    • Faith Obeys and Submits (11:8)
    • Faith Separates (11:8b) – “No to sin, and yes to God’s righteousness”
    • Faith Sojourns (v9) – means “you’re going on a trip no one else has taken”
    • Faith Seeks (v 10, 13-14)

Thoughts on Sunday

I think I’m going to try doing some regular posts on my observations of service at my church each week.  Of course the first one is a bit late but that’s okay.

Here we go:

  • Pastor Marshall continued his series on Spiritual Disciplines – talking about serving and stewardship.  Wow – pretty brave to tackle such tough topics together! – but I think he did a great job.
  • “Serving God is not an option” (Joshua 24:15)
  • We don’t serve God to BE forgiven – we serve because we ARE forgiven

Some points on Stewardship:

  • God Owns Everything!
  • Giving is an act of Worship
  • Giving reflects faith in God’s promises.
  • “get ready to give”
  • “give generously”
  • “go for the great harvest”
  • “give cheerfully”
  • “generate blessing”

Sunday PM:
Sunday night the team that went to the Ukraine (of which I was a part of) shared about our experience.  Pretty cool.  I’m going to be posting some video and powerpoints of the presentation on our church website this week sometime and I’ll update the links here.  It was really neat reliving our experience there.  I’m also hoping this week to post observations from my trip to Ukraine on my blog.
